Born on December 5, 1955, in Cleveland, Ohio, Mike Christian lost his mother to cancer when he was just nine years old. His father, Garnet, was left to care for Mike and his two brothers.

At age 10, Christian moved from Cleveland, Ohio, to California. As a teenager, Christian ran with a rough crowd. Los Angeles did not prove to be the “safe haven” that his father had hoped for. Mike became the leader of a local gang while simultaneously beginning to train with weights in order to beef up his 5'10" 170-pound body.

Like so many before him, Mike found his early inspiration in the pages of the various muscle magazines.

The family left Los Angeles for Oregon. It was there that bodybuilder Charles Amato entered Mike's life. Thirteen years Christian's senior, Amato convinced the younger man that despite the need to step onstage, oiled up and in your “underwear”, bodybuilding competition was indeed a “manly” pursuit. Mike overcame his aversion to posing in front of an audience and entered, and won, his first contest, the 1976 Mr. Portland.

It was not long before Christian dubbed himself "The Iron Warrior". He thought that it was a fitting tribute to both his earlier street-smart gang persona as well as his new reputation for fierce onstage competitiveness.

Continuing his march into the world of bodybuilding, in 1979 Christian placed third at the AAU Mr. Pacific Northwest contest and third in the AAU Junior Mr. America.

I
n 1981, Christian felt the need to be closer to the true Mecca Of Muscle. He and his girlfriend Marla moved back to the Los Angeles area . . . to Santa Monica, California.

In 1982, he switched to NPC contests and placed fifth in the heavyweight division at the NPC Nationals, watching Lee Haney win the overall. The next year, not less than six television stations covered Christian’s unanimous victory at The 1983 California State Championships at Fresno High School's amphitheatre.

Christian’s ticket to the pro division came with a 1984 heavyweight win at the World Amateur Championships. Seven months later, he entered his first pro event, The Night of Champions, landing fourth place. Rich Gaspari took second place, and he and Mike enjoyed a fierce rivalry throughout their careers. Christian competed in five Olympias (1985, fifth; 1986, third; 1987, fourth; 1989, sixth; and 1990, fourth).

Christian’s five years in the IFBB yielded five wins among 22 contests.

In 1991 and 1992, Christian competed in the short-lived World Bodybuilding Federation (WBF), which was established by wrestling promoter Vince McMahon.

In 2005 Mike was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame.
